ハッピーバースデイ@ オークウッド
東京のオークウッドでは、スタッフ(“アソシエイト”と呼びます)の誕生日を祝う習慣があります。スタッフ全員の誕生日がリストアップされており、誰かの誕生日が近づくと、バースデイ・カードが用意され、次々にメッセージが記入されていきます。もちろん、当の本人に気づかれないようにこっそりとカードを回覧するのです。
誕生日当日になると、そのスタッフにめでたくカードが手渡され、ケーキでお祝いします。在籍年数の長いスタッフになると、周囲もその人の好みを知っているので、好みに合ったケーキを用意します。そして「ハッピーバースデイ」を皆で歌ったあと、キャンドルが吹き消されます。
実は、私の誕生日は5月なのです。定例のスーパーバイザー会議の終了後、突然「おめでとうございます」と言われてびっくりしました！私は今年4月に異動したばかりで、現在オフィスがあるオークウッドレジデンス青山では初めての誕生日だったわけですが、たくさんのスタッフに囲まれ、にぎやかなサプライズ・パーティーとなりました。偶然にも（？）、この日供されたのは私の好きなスポンジケーキでした。とても美味しかったですよ。
それにしても、日本の女性はケーキが大好きですね…！この写真の笑顔を見てください。ケーキがあればみんなハッピーです。
もちろん、オークウッドにご滞在くださるお客様の誕生日もお祝いします。バースデイ・カードにサインを入れ、心ばかりの品と合わせて、そっとお部屋へお届けします。お客様はみな、ご自身のお誕生日をオークウッドが忘れていないことに満足してくださいます。
One of the nice things about being an Oakwood associate (staff member) in Tokyo is the way that we celebrate birthdays. We keep a list of every associate’s birthday and a week before a birthday falls a birthday card is circulated for everyone else to write a birthday message in. The hardest part of this is to keep the card a secret from the associate, but we have a good system in place. Then on the day of the birthday we hold a small party where we present the card to the associate and then serve up a birthday cake. And as we get to know our associates as they work for us over the years, we try and serve their favorite type of birthday cake at their party. We then have the associate to blow out the candles on the cake while we all sing “Happy Birthday”.
My own birthday falls in May, so I was pleased to celebrate my first Oakwood birthday at my new property of Oakwood Residence Aoyama. The associates surprised me by holding my party after our monthly Department Head meeting. So it was a bigger than normal birthday party. And I one big thing that I have noticed since I starting living in Japan is that every loves to eat cake. Especially the ladies! Cakes make everyone happy! Just look at the all the smiles on the photos to see this.
And what type of birthday cake did they serve at my own party? My favorite type of sponge cake of course! And I can assure you that it was delicious!
And we don’t forget to celebrate our resident’s birthdays as well. We all sign a birthday card and then send it to their apartment along with a small gift. Our residents are always happy to have their birthdays remembered by the Oakwood team.

オークウッドワールドワイドのプレジデントが来日しました
5月16日（金）、オークウッド・ワールドワイドのプレジデント、スティーブ・セルサー氏がロサンゼルスより来日しました。財務担当バイス・プレジデントのヴィンス・ルディニカ氏も同行。さらにシンガポールからも、オークウッド・アジア・パシフィックのトップを務めるPGマシュー氏とオペレーション担当バイス・プレジデントのピーター・ルーカス氏がこれに合わせて来日し、東京にあるオークウッド9物件をすべて案内しました。セルサー、ルディニカ両氏にとっては初めてのアジア訪問です。東京を皮切りに、ソウル（オークウッド・プレミア・コエックス・センター）、北京（オークウッドレジデンスおよびオークウッドアパートメンツ）、バンコク（オークウッド・シティ・レジデンスおよびオークウッドレジデンスSukhumvit24）を訪れ、最後に、地域本部であるオークウッド・アジア・パシフィックのオフィスを訪問する、というなかなかの強行スケジュールでした。
スティーブ・セルサー氏は、オークウッド・ワールドワイドのCFOを7年間務めた後、昨年10月にプレジデントに昇格しました。今回のアジア歴訪は、オークウッドのアジア展開に関するの知識を深め、アジアの物件とそこで働くスタッフ（オークウッドでは「アソシエイツ」と呼びます）を知ってもらうことが目的です。昨月サンディエゴで開催されたオークウッド・ワールドワイドの世界会議で、セルサー・ルディニカ両氏にお会いしたばかりの私にとっては、地元東京で彼らを迎えることができ、しかも私が総支配人を務める4物件をご案内することができたことは大変うれしいことでした。
うれしいことに、セルサー、ルディニカ両氏とも、東京の９つのオークウッドの素晴らしさに驚かれたようでした。東京の物件は、主に3つの異なるオーナー（三井不動産、GIC、およびハワイを本拠地とするプロスペクト・アセット・マネジメント）が所有しており、オークウッドはオーナーに代わってこれらのサービスアパートメントを運営しているのですが、両氏はこれらオーナー会社とも交流を持ち、短いながらも充実した時間を過ごしたようでした。
今回のツアーのハイライトは東京のマネジメントチームと来日エグゼクティブたちとのカクテルパーティーでした。それぞれの物件からの30名以上のマネージャーそしてスーパーバイザー達がオークウッドプレミア東京ミッドタウンの華やかなラウンジに集まりました。セルサー氏より東京の功績に賛辞が述べられ、私達東京チームは高い評価を受けました。彼は私達の今収めている業績や私達に寄せられた入居者の方からの素晴らしいコメント、また私達がここ日本でオークウッドを代表していることを大変誇りに思ってくれたようでした。
On Friday May 16th we hosted a tour of all nine Tokyo properties by Oakwood World Wide’s (OWW) President from Los Angles U.S.A., Mr. Steve Selcer. Accompanying Mr. Selcer on the tour was Mr. Vince Rudinica (OWW Treasurer and Vice President also from L.A.), Mr. P.G. Mathew (Oakwood Asia Pacific’s Managing Director from Singapore) and Mr. Peter Lucas (Oakwood Asia Pacific’s VP of Operations, Singapore). It was both Mr. Selcer’s and Mr. Rudinica’s first visit to Asia, with Tokyo being the first stop on a whirlwind tour that would take them to Seoul (Oakwood Premier Coex Center), Beijing (Oakwood Apartments and Oakwood Residence), Bangkok (Oakwood City Residence and Oakwood Residence Sukhumvit 24) and finally the OAP regional office in Singapore.
Steve Selcer was promoted to President in October last year after being OWW’s Chief Financial Officer for seven years. This trip was an educational tour for him to learn about the way Oakwood operates in Asia, to become familiar with the properties and to meet with Oakwood associates (employees). I had met both Steve and Vince on my recent trip to San Diego to the OWW Management meeting, so it was my great pleasure to help to make them feel welcome to Tokyo and to show case the four properties that I manage here (Oakwood Residences Akasaka and Aoyama and Oakwood Apartments Shirokane and Roppongi Central).
I am happy to mention that they were both very impressed with my properties, as well as the all of the other five Oakwoods, and that they thoroughly enjoyed their brief stay. As well as touring all of the properties, they took the opportunity to meet with our owners. Oakwood is a management company and we manage all our properties on behalf of the different owners. There are basically three different owners in Tokyo. Mitsui Fudosan, the Government Investment Corporation of Singapore (GIC) and Prospect Asset Management from Hawaii.

サンディエゴでのオークウッド国際会議
先月、オークウッド・ワールドワイドの会議が米国西海岸のサンディエゴで開催されました。日本からは、カントリーマネジャー兼オークウッドプレミア東京ミッドタウンの総支配人であるマーティン・フルックと、私の2名が出席しました。私にとっては初めての経験です。サンディエゴ湾でのディナークルーズで始まったこの会議には、米国、カナダ、イギリスから総勢220名の総支配人が出席。さらに、オークウッド・ワールドワイド本部（ロサンゼルス）の幹部と、オークウッド・アジア・パシフィック（シンガポール）の幹部も加わり、大規模な国際会議となりました。
自ら出席したことで、オークウッドの国際性を改めて実感した私ですが、同時に、オークウッドがコーポレートハウジングおよびサービスアパートメントの業界をリードする存在となった理由も見えてきました。北米のほぼすべての都市に物件があり、その総数は19,000件に及びます。日本や東南アジアと違い、北米のオークウッドは「コーポレートハウジング」と「オークウッドアパートメンツ」の2種類に分けられます。
「コーポレートハウジング（家具付き）」は美しくしつらえた戸建物件や高級アパート・コンドミニアムのことで、ビジネスなどで長期滞在が必要な方には最適です。物件そのものはオークウッドが一旦借り上げ、独自の家具や什器を置いてお客様にお貸しいたします（家具無しもございます）。一方、「オークウッドアパートメンツ」にはスタッフが駐在し、様々なサービスやアメニティを提供いたします。こちらは全米に50件ほどございます。
ところで、サンディエゴでは少しだけ時間があったので、初めてメジャーリーグの野球を観に行きました。サンディエゴ・パドレス対コロラド・ロッキーズの試合で、地元パドレスが勝ったので観客は大騒ぎに。スポーツが大好きな私にとって、ビッグゲームを本場で観戦できたのはラッキーでした。それに、現地の「ホットドッグ」はおいしいです！
翌日は国境を越え、メキシコに入りました。と言っても、サンディエゴ市内から路面電車でわずか45分。ティファナの街でおいしいメキシコ料理のランチをいただきました。実は、私はかれこれ24年前の1984年に一度だけサンディエゴに来たことがあるのです。そのときも全く同じようにティファナでランチを取ったことを思い出しました。
また、空母ミッドウェイも見ることができました。第2次世界大戦直後に製造された有名な空母で、かつて横須賀の米軍基地を母港としていましたが、今はサンディエゴ港で展示されています。

Last month I traveled to America to attend Oakwood Worldwide’s (OWW) 2008 Management Meeting in San Diego, California. On this trip I accompanied Martin Fluck who is Oakwood Japan’s Country Manager and the General Manager of Oakwood Premier Tokyo Midtown. While Martin has been to these meetings before, this was my first time to attend one of these meetings in the USA and it was a great experience for me. About 220 Oakwood General Managers from all over the USA, Canada and the UK, along with senior management from Los Angeles (the OWW head office) and from our regional office of Oakwood Asia Pacific (OAP) in Singapore, attended the meeting.
By attending this meeting I was able to see for myself that Oakwood Worldwide is an international hospitality and real estate company, and why it is the leading global provider of corporate housing and serviced apartments. Oakwood Worldwide has over 19,000 apartments located in virtually every North American city, and they do things a little differently to what we do in Oakwood Asia Pacific in that they offer two different services – Corporate housing and Oakwood Apartments.
"Corporate housing" describes beautifully furnished apartments, condominiums and homes that are ideal for relocating executives and others in need of extended stay accommodations. Oakwood Corporate Housing takes leases on premium residential apartments and homes, adds signature Oakwood furnishings, and then sublets the units to our guests. Oakwood Apartments manages over 50 upscale housing complexes across the USA which offers the additional comfort of onsite Oakwood hospitality staff, and a range of services and amenities.
Besides learning more about Oakwood Worldwide and meeting many of my colleagues from the USA, we had a little time for some sightseeing and fun in San Diego. I had actually been there once before, but it was way back in 1984 and I could not remember very much about the city. This time I went to my very first MLB game which was the San Diego Padres vs. the Colorado Rockies. I am not a big fan of baseball but I am a sports fan so it was great for me to attend a big game. The hot dogs tasted very good! And San Diego won the game, which made the crowd happy. The following day we crossed the border to Mexico (only 45 minutes by “trolley” train from downtown) and had a nice Mexican lunch in Tijuana. This was just the same as I did 24 years ago! Then the OWW meeting started off with a dinner cruise on San Diego Bay. Another highlight was a tour around the USS Midway, a famous World War Two era aircraft carrier that was once stationed in Japan.
